Before there were console role-playing games, there were pencil-and-paper ones. Dungeons & Dragons was invented in 1973 to kick off the whole genre, but starting in 1980 it was the subject of vicious attacks, claiming it induced suicides and Satanism.
Luckily, I have done some who-what-where-when-why research on just why this controversy erupted. If as many gamers as possible find out about this history, they can play RPGs and spread RPGs to others without fear. Of course, computer and console RPGs suffer only a slight image problem among the public compared to tabletop role-playing games.
