I've hesitated to review Goldeneye because it's in a genre that is unfamiliar genre to me. I can't make comparisons to other FPS titles, because I haven't played them.
Graphics
The graphics in Goldeneye are remarkable, for the most part. There is an extremely high level of detail in all of the indoor areas. The stages are designed in a logical way, meaning that you aren't just running through mazes the whole time. Buildings look like real buildings might if they actually existed. Enemies don't look too bad, either. Sometimes their weapons and limbs seem to be visible though closed doors, but this is easily forgiveable because of the overall level of detail. Outside areas, while not very plentiful, don't look as good as the indoor ones. There just isn't as much detail, overall, and it can be confusing to get around. overall, the graphics of Goldeneye are some of the finest on the N64. The game certainly doesn't dissapoint in this area.
Game Mechanics
There are 18 regular stages in Goldeneye, and two Secret Ones that can be accessed by beating the game on Secret Agent and 00 Agent Modes. There is a good variety of areas and objectives. Enough that the game won't seem to repetetive as it goes on.
There are three difficulties to chose from while playing. Agent Mode isn't too difficult for most platers. There is lots of ammo lying around, the enemies aren't too accurate, and the objectives aren't as challenging as on the other two modes. On Secret Agent mode, the game is pretty challenging. There is less ammo than on Agent mode, and the enemies are smarter and require more shots to kill. For most levels, there are also more objectives. 00 Agent is the most difficult mode in the game. Enemies are extremely accurate, and can kill you in a matter of seconds. Ammo is scarce, you will need several hits to kill an enemy, and the objectives are more plentiful and more difficult to accomplish. It will take a lot of practice to be able to beat the game on this mode, and it will never really become easy for most people.
There is a huge variety of weapons that you will find during the game. From guns, to knives, to grenades, and even mines. The weapons you have access to vary depending on the area you are in. What makes this even more interesting is that some of the weapons have silencers. So, if you are trying to sneak around, you need to use one of those, instead of something that will attract a lot of attention.
Also, depending on where you shoot an enemy, you will do verious amounts of damage. A head it will usually kill someone instantly, but it will take several limb hits to do the job. This further adds to the overall strategy aspect of the game. You can't simply shoot at everything that moves and expect to win. In some cases, you must even be sure not to injure civilians, and to protect certain equipment.
Instead of using Cheat Codes, like most games do, you need to earn the extras in Goldeneye. By beating different levels on different difficulties, in different amounts of time, you will earn various extra cheats. Infinate Ammo, and Invincibility are two examples. These cheats increase the replay value of the game even more, allowing you to do all sorts of things on various levels.
Story
The game is based on the movies by the same name. The game's story closely follows what happens in the movie, and does a very good job of it. If you've watched the movie, you will notice many similarities between the two, including events, and even the layout of certain places.
Final Thoughts
Goldeneye is my favorite game for the Nintendo 64. This game is the main reason for my deciding not to sell the system when things seemed to be going badly for it. I've played it countless times, and I'll play it countless times more.
