the battle system is is merely a unique twist to the ATB created by square for the ff games. instead of everyone having a status bar, everyone appears on the same bar, including enemies so you can antipate who's going to attack and when. the game even has data for how and who the monster is going to attack, ie flying thing A is going to cast Howl on Ryudo. I won't say that Secret of Mana is one of the best looking games on the SNES... but it is very good in the graphics department. The closest game for comparison would be Chrono Trigger. To me, the most important aspect of an RPG is the story, and dungeons are just something to fill the time between scenes that advance the plot. PS2's designers apparently had the opposite idea: 50+ hours of dungeon crawling and experience building and a plot that can be transcribed on three pages of text.
